About the data
Purpose
Understand how the licence mix evolves year over year, and whether paid categories hold up against free ones - the split that drives membership revenue.
What it shows
This visualization shows the distribution of licences over time, grouped by licence category.
Categories
Each licence is assigned to one of the following display categories:
| Category | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Regional | Standard regional licence (paid) |
| Junior | Junior licence (by age band, any price) |
| Fun | Starter-level licence |
| National | National-level licence |
| Free | Free adult licence |
| Junior (free) | Free junior licence |
| (unmapped) | Licence that matches no mapping rule (see below) |
Two extra series appear for expiring licences (shown in red): Expiring (all categories) and Junior (expiring) (junior licences, paid and free).
Excluded and unmapped licences
- (excluded) - operational or marginal licences (e.g. offer/extend with no amount) are hidden from the chart, the legend and the totals.
- (unmapped) - a residual bucket for licences that match no rule, typically free licences with no birth date (cannot be split junior/adult). Kept visible so no licence silently disappears from the totals.
Expiring licences
Licences marked "Expiring" are those whose end date falls between today and
December 31st of the current year - they require renewal before the deadline.
offer and extend licences are omitted from the expiring series.
